Hampel Employee Qualified to Race in Boston Marathon!

Chelsea, Territory Manager, completed her first-ever marathon in November of 2022 and achieved a time that qualified her to apply to race in the Boston Marathon. She submitted her application in September and will be racing in April 2024! She will also be sponsored by one of our brands, Citgo, who is also one of the official sponsors of the Boston Marathon. The Citgo sign is located near Kenmore Square, and it can be seen around Mile 24 of the Marathon. The sign serves as a famous landmark and a morale booster for marathon runners as they approach the final stretch of the race. Chelsea has been a star athlete since High School.  A two-time state qualifier in cross country and once in track at Sequoyah High School in Claremore . . . Was also a soccer standout, earning All-State honors twice. She went on to compete in cross country at the collegiate level at the University of Central Oklahoma. Now on to her next accomplishment!

The Boston Marathon is one of the most prestigious and oldest annual marathons in the world. The marathon is traditionally held on Patriots' Day, a holiday in Massachusetts commemorating the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. Boston is unique in that runners need to meet specific qualifying times in other marathons to participate. The standards are set according to age and gender, and this system has contributed to the race's elite status.

These are the numbers of qualifiers and how many were actually accepted to participate in the race:

                •             33,058 applications qualifiers.

                •             22,019 qualified applicants have been accepted

                •             11,039 qualifier applicants were unable to be accepted

                •             This year’s ‘Cut-Off’ time needed to gain acceptance into the Boston Marathon was 5 minutes, 29 seconds, or faster (5:29) than the qualifying time for each respective age group and gender.
